Sustainable Food Center Unveils Local Artist Jeri Moore's Six-piece Canvas, "Going to Market" as part of Silent Auction Benefit
Going to Market
(October 25, 2006) Austin, TX- On November 14th, Sustainable Food Center (SFC) will unveil a six-canvas piece of artwork by local artist Jeri Moore on the rooftop at Whole Foods Market on 6th and Lamar at 9pm as part of a silent auction benefiting the Austin Farmer's Market.  This art project, a collaboration between four local entities - SFC, Jeri Moore, Youthworks and Miller Blueprint is an effort to increase public awareness about the local food system, about the variety of local produce available and the essential role and value of the local growers within that system. The unveiling is in conjunction with the after party of Austin Film Society's earlier evening viewing of Fast Food Nation at the Paramount Theatre.

Jeri Moore's commissioned piece entitled, "Going to Market" depicts hard working farmers in the midst of their plentiful crops just outside the city limits.  It's a stirring piece of bold colors and dark lines, with surrealist undertones and a hint of folklore. The piece hopes to provoke viewers to recognize their own farming community and the easy access to fresh, nutritious food that's available through the Austin Farmer's Market.

Having received funding from the Austin Community Foundation in honor of the Austin Farmers' Market, the painting has been photographed and made into a banner that will hang on the east side of the Miller Blueprint building at 6th and San Antonio. The colorful painting will cover the side of Miller Blueprint for up to two years, adding to the life of downtown Austin.  The banner will serve to direct travelers to the AFM location, just south of Republic Square Park.  Since Republic Square Park is a mere 2 blocks south of Miller Blueprint, this banner will be an invaluable outreach tool for the market, not to mention one more entry to the list of things that makes Austin unique.

About the Artist

Jeri Moore's unique style has found a welcome home in the restaurant environment for its thematic content, as well as its sumptuous and colorful visual imagery.  One of her largest murals, "Texas Harvest" (17'x38"), was commissioned by Robert Del Grande, Executive Chef at Houston's Café Annie in 1989.  Soon after, he commissioned a second mural, "The Beach" (11'x 25"), for sister restaurant Café Express in Houston.  Jeri completed large works of art for Saba Blue Water Café at both Austin and Houston locations. In June of 2006 a triptych of Jeri's work was installed at the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort in Bastrop. Jeri enjoys painting murals and large pieces, because they require more physical action and movement.

Every year, Moore donates artwork to non-profit organizations/efforts. In 1991, she donated her first mural, entitled "Lost Childhood" (9'x11') to Children's Protective Services in Houston.  In 1994, she donated a mural called "Family" (10'x22') to the Esperanza Family Shelter in Santa Fe, NM. "Going to Market" is her most recent donation, benefiting AFM.
